Young man kills lover and her mother

According to Broadhurst station commander Obusitswe Lokae, the police are investigating the murder of a 30-year-old woman and her mother aged 53, who are alleged to have been murdered by a 22-year-old man. Lokae said that due to the injuries they sustained, the suspicion is that the culprit might have used a knife.

“We received the report around 9:45pm and on arrival we found the two women lying in a pool of blood. We took them to Princess Marina Hospital (PMH) where on arrival they were confirmed dead by the doctors. The suspect is alleged to have been in a love relationship with the daughter.”

Lokae revealed that the incident occurred at the victims’ yard in Phiring location and the deceased and the suspect all originate from Lerala village.

He said the suspect, who went on the run  after the incident, was arrested on Monday. “We do not know what caused the misunderstanding between the deceased and the lad, but investigations on the matter are ongoing to establish what could have led to the young man’s horrible actions,” Lokae said.

He said that the suspect was arraigned yesterday at Broadhurst magistrate court for the offence of double murder.

Meanwhile, Lokae said apart from the double murder, the past long weekend was relatively calm as they recorded only minor offences compared to the past holidays.

He said there were police patrols within his policing area, noting that this contributed to peaceful holidays.

“We did not encounter major cases like rape, fatal road accidents, robbery over the long weekend because of the operations that the police had. We only recorded two cases of armed robbery before the long weekend in which people were attacked by thieves in their homes and threatened them with knives,” Lokae said.

Lokae said that all bars in his policing area were opened and closed on time, thus forcing people to go back to their respective homes.

“The police worked after hours and made sure that all drinking spots like bars and depots were closed at the right time. For a change, we did not record a fatal accident, but only a minor one that occurred at Oodi/Matebeleng village on Friday at Welcome Bar, in which a man drove over two people with a car, claiming to have been attacked by a mob who wanted to rob him,” Lokae said.

He said that the driver drove over people who were sitting enjoying their drinks in front of the bar. He said that both victims sustained leg fractures and they are currently hospitalised at PMH.
