Malesu, who joined at the beginning of the year, was supposed to have left at the end of August, after just six months in charge.

The BFA announced in August that Malesu had decided to leave the association. He had reportedly cited business commitments as the reason for his resignation. But Malesu has remained in charge amid reports he might, after all, stay on.

Sources said Malesu was keen to stay on and wants to implement sweeping changes at the secretariat.

“Remember, this is a political position.  Therefore, he needs time to clean the secretariat and get his trusted people on board. If that happens, he is prepared to stay. Much also depends on how his campaign for the Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) presidency goes,” a source said. Malesu is amongst five candidates vying for the BNOC presidency, in elections due on October 7.

If he wins, Malesu would vacate his position at BFA. He was unavailable for comment yesterday. He replaced Kitso Kemoeng amid opposition from some members of the National Executive Committee.

It is reported that BFA president, Maclean Letshwiti was yet to identify a suitable candidate to replace Malesu.

Sources said Letshwiti does not see the issue of the CEO as an immediate priority as he wants to focus on ensuring that the BFA’s bank balance is healthy and that all structures within the secretariat are functional.

“After that, he would look at the issue of appointing a CEO. As it is, it’s pointless to have another CEO before pressing matters like the association’s finances are addressed,” the source said.

The BFA was reportedly P10 million in the red when Letshwiti took office in August 2016.
