Barolong chief faces nuisance charges

The 67-year-old is the third in command in the customary court.

Marumoloa is being charged in connection with a February 12 incident at Goodhope customary court in which he allegedly hurled insults at his subordinates accusing them of betraying him.

It is alleged that Marumoloa flew into a rage and threatened to assault his subordinates telling them that he was “tired of hearing my name being dragged in the mud”.

At his initial appearance before Lobatse chief magistrate, Mareledi Dipate three days after the incident, Marumoloa pleaded not guilty and was thereafter granted bail with conditions. His trial will begin today after earlier postponement.

The state, represented by Lapologang Mbwe, intends to call five witnesses amongst them several Goodhope customary court employees and the investigating officer.  The case is said to involve several complainants because the alleged insults and harassment were generalised.

Attorney Busang Manewe represents the accused.  Meanwhile, two Lobatse men are due to appear in court today for allegedly raping, robbing and murdering a middle-aged Botoka ward woman.  In an incident that left many in shock, the duo Otlhomame Setshwano (26) and David Sibanda (24) are alleged to have, on September 3, attacked, raped, robbed her of an undisclosed amount of cash and then murdered her.

The woman’s body was found two days after the incident with her hands tied behind her back and her body hidden under a heap of clothes. The accused were arrested two days later and have been in remand since then.

The duo is expected to hear the outcome of their application for bail today.  The duo are representing themselves while, Sergeant Boitumelo Chinyenge of Woodhall Police is representing the state.

“These are the same people who have been terrorising the city with armed robberies, stealing motor vehicles, supplying drugs and other offenses,” said Lesetedi.

“The police have discovered that the use of drugs is getting out of control in the city as there are some clubs, pubs and other entertainment places are popularly known for drug use. We are aware of what is happening in those areas. We know that drugs are used and smoked freely hence the need to strengthen the fight.”

Lesetedi stated that in the past police had an excellent engagement with the Department of Immigration which had made arrests possible and this would continue in order to stamp out drug trafficking.
