Red tide: The ruling party is cracking down on discipline within its ranks

The development comes after BDP NYEC  wrote a letter to the party’s central committee complaining about the behaviour of Mhuriro and Ogaufi Nthobelang, another former NYEC member. The NYEC accused the two of tarnishing the party’s name and sabotaging the new youth committee.

According to a letter dated September 27, Mhuriro has  been ordered to appear with witnesses should he so wish.

“You are kindly reminded to bring all witnesses you wish to rely on in support of your case.  You are further advised of your right to represent yourself or appoint any member of the party to assist you in these proceedings,” Yame Kebabonye wrote on behalf of the disciplinary committee’s chairperson.

Mmegi has learnt that Nthobelang will find out his verdict on the same day of Mhuriro’s hearing.

Last month, Mhuriro refused to appear before the disciplinary hearing after he requested it to furnish him with documents that will enable him to mount a defence.

“I don’t fancy myself appearing even now as they haven’t furnished me with what I required. They didn’t respond to my previous communiqué to their committee until now and this to me is not a response to my request but rather they are ignoring it,” Mhuriro told Mmegi. Currently nine of the NYEC members are under 90-day suspensions dished out by the party’s president, Ian Khama for acts of indiscipline.

The nine members are facing various charges ranging from behaving in a grossly disorderly and unruly manner that might put the party name into disrepute as well as sowing seeds of discord in the party using regionalism, tribalism or factionalism.
