But a motion of no confidence in the Tshepho Bathai-led committee scuppered the developments.

The return of Bathai at the helm of the association has meant the revival of the initiatives, with the BOKA Foundation already up and running. “The foundation is a non-profit trust intended to engage the public and private sector, and other stakeholders in partnerships with the Botswana Karate Association.  The primary purpose of the foundation is to advance, promote, and support the mission of BOKA,” he said.

Bathai said the foundation is also meant to enhance excellence at BOKA by building enduring relationships and resources that enable the karate association to become a leading sport code.

He said the foundation is the official fundraising arm of the association and strengthens relations with its key stakeholders in the business community, karatekas and donors.

Bathai said the foundation is governed by a board of trustees and guided by a vision and values of BOKA.

Some of its objectives include improving the financial capacity of BOKA and lessen dependence on government funding.  The foundation also intends to fund programmes that are designed to improve the performance of leading athletes and in place building blocks for future generations.

The foundation intends to assist in fast tracking the development of coaches and karate administrators who would assist in grassroots karate development.

The board of trustees are; Matlhogonolo Mponang (chairperson), Thapelo Letsholo (vice chairperson), Lebogang Gaobakwe (treasurer), Bathai (secretary), Kgosi Kgari Sechele III (member), Fatema Khan (member), Vish Sethi (member), Favor Marebole (member) and Lucinda Thuso Tlale (member).
