Ex-lover turns witness in murder case

Nkonyana (57) is accused of the murder of Onthusitse Mokgwaphe, which happened on or about March 14, 2010 near Botlhapatlou village in Kweneng District.

When testifying before Gaborone High Court Judge Michael Mothobi yesterday, Gaetwesepe told court that she dated the accused before she ended the relationship to be with the deceased.

She said the accused did not take kindly to the break-up, something that resulted in bad blood between him and the deceased.

“We had an affair with the accused in 2008 but when I terminated the affair, he was not happy about it. He did not agree with the termination of the relationship. But after I reported him to my uncle, he promised to leave the issue alone,” Gaetwesepe said.

However, the witness said the accused kept in constant communication with her, until the week of March 13, 2010 when they met.

“He told me that the week would not end before I experienced something painful. I didn’t understand what he meant by that, but before the week ended, I was informed that my boyfriend was deceased. I assumed that the words he uttered were related to Othusitse’s death.”

She stated the deceased had also told her that he met the accused in Botlhapatlou after she told him that she was having an affair with him (deceased). According to her, this was because the accused had been searching for the deceased.

Gaetwesepe said when she started having an affair with the accused, she was not aware that he was a married man even though they lived in the same ward of Phuthadikobo ward in Molepolole.

It is alleged that the accused killed the deceased by strangling him to death. The case continues.
