Rollers, IWG blame game on prize money persists

The two teams played a curtain raiser game to the match between Platinum Stars and Rollers men’s sides in March this year.
Organisers, the International Working Group of Women and Sport (IWG) and Township Rollers both refuse to take responsibility regarding the prize money payments.
Rollers women’s team was supposed to receive P20,000 after defeating their cross-town rivals, GU who themselves were entitled to P10, 000 for their participation.
IWG secretary general, Game Mothibi said they were partners with Rollers who were supposed to take care of the prize money.
She said Rollers, as partners, were expected to take care of the technical aspect of the tournament, which included paying prize monies.
“Township Rollers took gate passes during the match, which is one of the technical aspects we are talking about.
Therefore, they are the ones who are supposed to pay the two teams,” she said.
“We have long requested a meeting with Rollers concerning the matter as GU want their money from us.
We noticed that there is confusion on who is supposed to pay,” Mothibi said.
“We then made efforts to meet with our partners (Rollers) to get to the bottom of the matter, but that has not happened.”
She said they are willing to settle the matter so that the teams get what belongs to them to avoid tarnishing IWG’s image.
Rollers spokesperson, Bafana Pheto said while they were partners with IWG, the arrangement was only for the men’s match.
He accused IWG of not telling the truth, saying the organisation was responsible for the women’s match.
“There is no how we are going to be responsible because IWG organised that match with an agreement to take care of the costs,” Pheto said.
“We now are surprised that they want to create a bad reputation for us after what we agreed on.”
He said GU had demanded proof of the agreement before the game, but it was not availed, according to sources.
