It all started late last week when screenshots showing a conversation between a Facebook user and UB40 Facebook page administrators. The Facebook user asked the band if they will be coming to the country, which resulted in the UB40 Facebook page administrators saying that they are not aware of such a booking. This sparked a lot of confusion among people especially those that had already purchased tickets.

“I am bringing UB 0. Why would I spend a huge amount of money booking them and say they will not come. People are just trying to cause confusion.  If you go online on the UB 40 page you will see that they have Botswana on their line-up of performances,” event promoter Resego Matenge said in an interview.

He noted that the local music industry has bitter people in the form of backstabbers who do not want to see a fellow local succeed.

“Negativity flies quicker; people are bitter and angry and they use social media for wrong reasons. In developed countries people use social media to make money”. Another issue that has been going on was that people have been asking which UB40 will be performing since the original band split into two in 2008 and one of the teams led by Ali Campbell named their band UB40 despite the existence of the old band.

Matenge confirmed that the touring band will be consisting of Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue.  Apart from the controversy, Matenge stated that the build up of the event is coming up well as tickets are being sold.

A local line-up of performing acts has also been announced and it will comprise of Charma Gal, Wizards of the Desert and South African acts like DJ Fresh and the Lucky Dube Band.
