Jwaneng player collapses, dies during match

Club coach, Tshepo Mathule told Mmegi that the deceased collapsed onto his knees after taking a corner-kick during the game. The names of the deceased are being withheld for now.

“We were playing in hot weather and it’s possible that there was an issue of dehydration,” the coach said.

“He was rushed to the hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival.” Mathule described the deceased as a young player full of life and passion for football. “He was also a staunch supporter of Jwaneng Galaxy and his passing is a loss to all of us,” he said.

Jwaneng Police acting station commander, assistant Superintendent Mogotsi Thelo said the incident had not been reported immediately to police. Instead, officers were called by hospital authorities to come and sign forms declaring that there was no foul play in the incident.

Meanwhile, police in the area are investigating a stabbing incident involving a 23-year-old man and his 22-year-old girlfriend. The police alleged the man stabbed the girlfriend multiple times, killing her in the process. The incident, Thelo said, took place in Betesankwe near Jwaneng recently.

The suspect has already appeared at the Magistrate’s Court and has been denied bail. Police are also searching for a suspect in the rape of a 14-year-old girl who was attacked in a bushy area in Unit 8, Jwaneng. Thelo said the victim reported that she was walking from Unit 5 to 8 when she met a man who offered her a lift, saying he was protecting her from thieves. The victim agreed and on the way to Unit 8, the driver turned into the bush and raped her.
