The four teams; Mochudi Centre Chiefs, Extension Gunners, Sharps Shooting Stars and TAFIC participated in the one-day football event played at the National Stadium on July 22.

However, the four teams were made to wait longer for payment.  Sharps are set to walk away with P200,000 for winning the cup, Chiefs will receive P100,000 for finishing as runners-up while Gunners and TAFIC pocket P50,000 each as consolation prizes.

Botswana National Sport Commission chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng said after meeting the GCC mayor, Kagiso Thutlwe the Commission was given assurances that the teams were to receive their dues yesterday.

“We have approached the mayor after media allegations that the teams were owed. I think the issue is now in the public domain hence it is appropriate to speak about it now. We were told that the payment was delayed and the payments would be done tomorrow (Wednesday) and a prize giving ceremony would follow on Thursday (today).

We have engaged the mayor and he assured us that the money would be paid. This is a serious issue that may end up tarnishing the image of the sport,” Reikeletseng said at the Mayor’s Marathon press briefing on Tuesday.

In the recent past participants and volunteers alike at major sporting events have cried foul over owed dues, recently being the volunteers at the Netball World Youth Cup, which Botswana hosted in July.

The marathon event coordinator, Bruce Nkgakile told journalists that there would be incentives for the volunteers in the marathon scheduled for September 16.

“It is not payment, but our volunteers would be provided with free food and transport and t-shirts for the event,” he said.

Reikeletseng, however said the organisers should involve the Sport Volunteers Movement (SVM) for the event.

“This is where we differ with the Mayor. We have a volunteer’s body called SVM, which is regulated by the BNSC. Our volunteers should have incentives at the end of the day. They are humans beings, they would have to move from one point A to B after the event,” he said.
