The group attribute maths and science poor performance to poor curricula delivery as they are offered in a theoretical way as opposed to being practical.

The University of Hard Knocks, a consultancy business that started a mathematics and science competition in a few Gaborone schools in 2015 and later expanded to cover all primary schools in Gaborone sub region is determined to change maths and science teaching in the country.

The company held the grand finale of the competition in Gaborone on Friday where Mophane Primary School emerged the overall best school in the quiz.

Abysinia Thatana and Angela Mogorosi both from Mophane Primary School scooped position one and two respectively in the quiz, followed by Teto Pogiso from Lesedi Primary School.

Deputy director of the company at the forefront of the competition, Queen Koronale told The Monitor that the contest is meant to change learners’ attitudes towards maths and science subjects.

“We decided to start at primary level to develop interest in these subjects so we catch them at a tender age.

Moreover, we believe the curricula must make maths and science fun and interesting. The competition exposes learners to rapid mental calculations, puzzles, quizzes and maths magic, which is fun filled and thrilling,” Koronale said.

“We believe that the root of the problem is at grassroots level and therefore our interventions must also target our foundations.”

Moreover, she said the advancement and perfection of mathematics and science are intimately connected with the prosperity of the nation, and she appealed to the nation to support interventions meant to support the improvement of these subjects.

Maths and science failure rates continue to be an eyesore in the country.
