Motor Holdings sees opportunities in the wake of GM's Africa exit

This week, the company told Mmegi Business that while the Chevrolet brand will be discontinued, new makes will be introduced, adding that Motor Holdings Botswana has been appointed sole franchise representative of both Isuzu and Opel in the country.

Motor Holdings director, Charles Tibone noted that this will also incorporate ongoing support to both Opel and Chevrolet customers. Motor Holdings profile will be enhanced as they are now the sole representative of the franchise.

“Isuzu Motors will be investing in South Africa by purchasing the Struandale plant and the remaining 30% shareholding in the Isuzu Truck South Africa joint venture,” he said.

He added that Isuzu will continue to build Isuzu pick-ups and trucks, consolidated into one business known as Isuzu Motors South Africa, effective January 2018.

Tibone also stated that South Africa will serve as an important base for the growth of the Isuzu brand in Africa in the long-term, adding that the Botswana market will be an important component in the growth strategy. According to Tibone, GM has ended Chevrolet manufacturing in South Africa while sales will continue until the run-out of inventory later this year.

He said Opel has reinforced its commitment to the Botswana market with plans to further grow its market presence in the country in the future.

He further said Chevrolet sales will discontinue in the SADC markets once the existing stock has run out, while Opel will continue to be offered for sale in the South African and Botswana markets.

“As already stated, ongoing support will be provided to both Opel and Chevrolet customers,” Tibone said.

He noted that ongoing after-sales and parts support will continue for all Chevrolet and Opel customers through the appointed dealer network, adding that in the case of Botswana, Motor Holdings will, going forward, continue to provide support to Opel and Chevrolet customers through their outlets in Gaborone and Francistown.

“All existing warranties and service plans remain in place and will be honoured,” he said.

Apart from the change of ownership at the mother company level, Tibone said operations on the ground will remain unchanged.
