The 3x3 National Young Lions Cup tournament will feature teams from Francistown, Kang, Lobatse, Serowe, Maun and Gaborone.

Gaborone region will be the first to host the games this weekend at Botho University. Other regions will start their competitions from next weekend.

Each regional tournament will see the 12 teams for both boys and girls split into four groups in a round robin format. The winners from each region will proceed to the finals on October 14 in Gaborone.  “This is one of our development strategies we have put up to help develop young players from across the country and also sell the sport nationwide.

The 3x3 is a much faster game and it makes it easier for young players to learn more about the sport,” BBA president, Boineelo Hardy said. She said the other goal for introducing such an initiative for young players is to build a team that will play in the Olympics qualifiers.

The tournament winners will compete in a regional tournament in December in a country yet to be announced.

Regional registration is open and teams can log in to play.fiba3x3.com to register. Registration is free of charge.

The 3x3 basketball format is gaining momentum in the country as more tournaments are being organised particularly for young players.
