Khama said he has been aware of the project for some time now but had not been given convincing reasons for the developments. According to sources, the Botswana Golf Union (BGU) has signed a non-disclosure agreement with the developer, which means they are not at liberty to disclose what the project is about.

Gaborone Golf Club (GGC) captain, Martin Mogomela said the problem is that they are not aware of the terms of the project or where the funding would come from.

“We do not know what the project entails. This is a wrong move by the BGU. (President) Khama has not been given convincing answers by the concerned parties. The other thing is that this project is being done on public land,” he said.

BGU president, Enoch Mushango said they would meet with the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) and approach Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Thapelo Olopeng on the way forward.

“Olopeng would then approach Khama and explain to him the importance of this project. Khama has been given false information about the project by GGC. He cannot just stop it.

I guess he made the announcement because he listened to the plight of the GGC members,” he said.

Mushango said Khama cannot take a decision to stop the project before meeting the minister.

“This is a multi million pula project and the contract has been signed with the developer. If he (Khama) learns that he has been misled, there would be consequences,” Mushango said.

Meanwhile, Khama has been given honorary membership of the GGC. Mogomela said the membership has nothing to do with the project.

“It is recognition of him having been our president for the past 10 years. It is a humble gesture from us. Now that he is going to have more free time, he can come and play or just walk around,” he said.

He said re-opening of the clubhouse is a positive thing, adding the members have been suffering after the clubhouse was gutted by fire in 2015.
