The two teams were evenly matched at the start, but Lakers were soon out of sight in the first quarter with points coming from Jacqueline Penduka and Tsitsi Chibonda, as the two combined superbly.

BDF V tried to regroup with Victoria Leagajang at the centre of some moves, and found a willing ally in Babirye Kintu. Despite BDF V’s efforts, Lakers clung on to their lead. The high tempo encounter had a number of fouls, and Chibonda capitalised to stretch her team’s lead to 31-24 at half time. In the second quarter, BDF V opted for a shooting game with Resego Moepeng staying behind her opponents’ post to shoot for the hoops once she received the ball.

Lakers played a game full of formation, with ball distribution at the core, which saw Penduka give the BDF V defence a torrid time upfront. Lakers focused much on attacking, which left their defence exposed, and Moepeng took full advantage to bag 18 points in the match.

Lakers lead had been cut to just four points at 40-36 at that stage. Due to Lakers’ change of formation, BDF V was weakened and fatigue set in.

Leagajang played as a lone ranger, lacking support upfront. Lakers ran 61-49 winners at the end of the day, which left defeated coach, Mphato pleased, nonetheless.

“Today’s performance was outstanding, we didn’t concede much. We are improving with every match. I am glad with the way my side is playing. This is a young team dominated by Under-20 players,” Mphato said.

Lakers coach, Vusa Ndlovu equally said BDF V was a good team despite the loss. “It was a difficult match. Fatigue is catching up with us, BDF V is playing good basketball. It’s a transition game. They are a good and happy team,” he said.
