Two Thursdays back, the organisers, Joy Foundation, announced the cancellation of the tournament, which was supposed to take place last Saturday. Now, TAFIC have sought legal advice on the way forward.

TAFIC entered into an agreement with Joy Foundation to take part in the four-team, one-day tournament, which was to include Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Zimbabwean sides, Highlanders and Dynamos.

Each member of the participating teams, including players and officials, were to receive P5,000 each as appearance fees. TAFIC chairperson, Thomas Maika said they were disappointed after the cancellation, but are still in the dark as to why the tournament was not held.  “We have not received a satisfactory explanation after we had set our sights (on participating) and invested heavily in the preparation for the cup,” he said.

“As one of the major stakeholders in the cup, it would only be appropriate for the organisers to formally enlighten us in detail as to what led to the cancellation.”

“To cancel the cup like that when we had dedicated ourselves to it could have adverse effects on our squad and our preparations for the league. That needs to be fully addressed.

“We have decided to hand the contract to our legal advisers to study it and guide us as to what route we can take going forward.”

In a recent interview with Joy Foundation director, Joy Setshedi, she said they are still working (in consultation with the Botswana Premier League) on new dates for the tournament. She said only after the meeting (with the Premier League), will a new date be set and a press briefing arranged.

Chiefs manager, Clifford Mogomotsi who said they were equally disappointed, revealed they only learnt of the cancellation through the media. The organiser only wrote to Chiefs about the cancellation on Monday, after the tournament date had passed.  “Joy (Setshedi) wrote to us on Monday informing us that the tournament had failed and they are planning another tournament that will only be played by local teams and we have written to her informing her that we will not take part in the next tournament,” Mogomotsi said.
