But BAA treasurer, Brian Mosweu said while they are aware of the possibility of companies using athletes for endorsement, the athletics mother body is not well versed with the process.

“We are still learning the ropes around endorsements. We do not want one day to see a billboard around town with an athlete image before the association is consulted. You must also know that athletes have managers. We must improve our relations with managers,” he said.

Mosweu said since the World Championships, they have not received any request from companies seeking permission to work with athletes.

Meanwhile, BAA recently sent out a press release informing the public that companies and individuals who want to raise funds for the team must seek permission from BAA.

“Companies and individuals who wish to raise funds for Team Botswana that recently took part in the just-ended World Championships in London should seek permission from BAA,” the BAA said.

The release further said the public should distance itself from any company or anybody who is not permitted by the BAA to carry out the fund raising.

The statement said the forbidden arrangement includes advertising using athletes names and images.

Mosweu said they have, through the assistance of Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) opened a bank account for the team.

He said they realised that Batswana have shown interest in donating to the team because they were impressed by their London performance.

“We decided to open a separate account so that we can be able to account for the amount that has been donated.  As I talk to you now, I have not checked how much has been deposited thus far,” Mosweu said.
