A serial defector, Davids dropped his resignation letter at the BNF offices yesterday morning, without stating reasons. Mmegi has learnt that of recent, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) MP has been in talks with the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). In fact, his letter of application to the ruling party was yesterday circulating on social media platforms.

“It is true Davids resigned from the party. Our office received the letter this morning. I cannot say much because I am not at the office,” BNF secretary general, Moeti Mohwasa confirmed.

Davids recently raised eyebrows when he accompanied President Ian Khama to Sweden on his official visit to that Scandinavian country.

This, just weeks after the UDC and BNF president Duma Boko had petitioned Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven prior to Khama’s visit. The petition raised questions about Botswana’s military expenditure and depletion of country’s natural resources.

It came as a surprise to the UDC when Davids later accompanied Khama on his visit.

Davids is known for defections across the parties. At some point, he was a member of Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD)  after defecting from the BDP.  He joined BNF a year before the 2014 general elections.

He first came to Parliament in 1999 after he defeated his nemesis and namesake, Isaac Mabiletsa of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) during the general elections. After five years, he lost against Mabiletsa who had then rejoined the BNF.

Mmegi has been informed that Davids had told some of his party members that he would not be part of UDC if Sidney Pilane was part of it. A source said that Davids believes that the UDC could have taken a stand, more so that Ndaba Gaolathe has been with the BMD during the difficult times in 2014 when Pilane was not active in politics.

Last year, the BNF Mochudi East constituency petitioned the MP, accusing him of mishandling himself and misrepresenting the constituency by paralysing the constituency office to settle his personal scores. They took the petition to the district commissioner, Mompoloki Mochanang to take the petition to Parliament.

Davids last year reported his administration officer, Peter Tau to the Mochudi police alleging that the latter had assaulted him at the office.

Efforts to get comment from Davids were unsuccessful as his mobile number was off.
