Nkaigwa has since confirmed that he is a card-carrying member of the Alliance for Progressives (AP). Nkaigwa was at some point said to be against the idea of forming a new party, intent to stay under the UDC.

“I was at the morning session, but I then had to rush to South Africa to attend a church function. I am a member of AP, which is the only solution to liberate Batswana from the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP),” he said.

Nkaigwa said he believed they could work with other opposition parties and nothing stops them from working with parties under the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC).

“I am a man of God and the spirit informs all decisions I take in life. AP is what the voice of God has directed. Watch and see the growth of the party. I so wish God can give our leaders spiritual eyes. Our enemy is not other opposition parties, but the ruling party.  No love has been lost for my UDC president Duma Boko. I respect him as my leader. I respect president Ndaba Gaolathe as my leader.

I also embrace president Dumelang Saleshando for joining forces with the UDC. What we need is a united opposition towards 2019,” he said.

On BMD being part of the coalition, Nkaigwa dismissed the presence of the party.

“There is no BMD and I do not know of any BMD leadership. Leadership is voted by people and not self-imposed. No one will ever take them seriously.

I even made it clear to them during negotiations at Bobonong that they should be ashamed of themselves on what they have done to opposition politics, disturbing a God-given opportunity to take power from the ruling party. I do not hate them, but hate their deeds,” he said,

Nkaigwa further pleaded with former BMD councillors to join the AP without any fear as it is God’s will.

Nkaigwa said his conscience is clear and has no worries with the decision they took to form a new party and will enhance opposition strength in 2019.

He said the party was not formed to fight the UDC, but rather to work with the UDC in delivering Batswana from the BDP oppression.
