Kgosi Modise advocates for health officers accommodation

On Monday, Modise wanted to know if the Minister of Health and Wellness was aware of the issue and what they were doing about it. Kgosi Modise asked; “what does your ministry intends to do in order to assist the officers because there is no public transport between Lerala and Martins Drift border post?” “My ministry is aware that there is neither institutional housing nor accommodation in Martins Drift.

My wishes are to inform the house that accommodation of employees and transport were requested under NDP 11. Unfortunately, the request could not be accommodated owing to ceiling constraints,” assistant Minister, Phillip Makgalemele responded.

Makgalemele said they were continuing to explore other options such as Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) and they intend to re-submit under special dispensation within NDP11 to re-prioritise requests, especially that some of these borders do not have nearby villages where accommodation can be arranged. “With regards to transport, I wish to inform the house that my ministry has shortage of transport.

However, respective District Health Management Teams  (DHMTs) are instructed to prioritise provision of transportation to critical staff such as port health officers. My ministry will provide transport to such needy DHMTs as it procures, funds permitting,” he said. However, Modise told the Makgalemele to act on the matter quickly because lives were in danger, as they are forced to ask for lifts from strangers after work.
