The initiative stems from a pledge made in 2015 by Mozambican officials who expressed a desire to transform the home of the Kgaboesele family in Lobatse into a museum.

The family and their home, accommodated Mozambique’s late leader and African icon, Samora Machel, during his exile in the fight to liberate the east African country.

The project entails relocating the Kgaboesele family into a newly built home and revamping the old refuge into a museum.

Yesterday, Lobatse Town Council publicity officer, Segametsi Kebonang told Mmegi the first bricks had been laid at the family home and the progress of construction was “notable”.

Kebonang said the delay had been caused by legal procedures around the land on which the museum is being built. Mmegi is informed that the P1 million project was delayed by legalities surrounding the ownership of the plot.

“Construction has finally started and the first brick has been laid,” she said.

“However, we do not have much details because the project is being undertaken by the Mozambique government. We are just partners.

“We had authority over the land where the museum is being constructed and hence we needed to do some processes before we could give the go ahead.”
