The University of Botswana (UB) Pool Club has lodged a protest saying that Matsubutsubu Pool Club used two defaulters when the two teams clashed in the league. Their query is that the unnamed players had not been registered, but were allowed to play. The issue has since delayed the prize giving ceremony, which was scheduled for last weekend. UB captain, Pako Monageng said they noticed immediately after the game and informed BBC but were surprised when they were not docked points. He said they expect Matsubutsubu to lose such points, which will enable his side to finish second in the league.

The league comprised four teams in the men’s category with the same teams also bringing their women sides. Acres Pool Club finished the league at the top and will pocket P10,000. Matsubutsubu who are accused of using defaulters finished second and will walk away with P5,000 while UB and Botho University finished third and fourth respectively.

In an interview with Mmegi Sport yesterday BBC vice president technical, Bakang Mosikare said the awards ceremony was postponed because they have since realised that the positions might change.

“There was no how we could proceed with the awarding because we are dealing with an issue whereby one club is accused of using defaulters. Therefore, we are still dealing with that matter first,” Mosikare said. He said they are yet to set a new date on the handing over of the prizes. The winning coach, Joseph Tsienyane of Acres said that they are aware of the matter. He said the issue now delays them from getting what they have worked for. Tsienyane said they knew that Matsubutsubu have been using defaulters because players were long registered before the league started while the accused came late and failed to register.

“We have been informed that University of Botswana Pool Club lodged a protest against Matsubutsubu for using unregistered players during the league. However, we knew at our club that those players were not registered hence we did not allow them to play against us,” he said.

Matsubutsubu chairperson, Mpho Mokalakane said he has no comment on the issue because they are supposed to meet with BBC committee. He however admitted that the prize ceremony was postponed because the other team lodged a protest against them.

“We cannot say anything on the matter for now because we were informed that UB is protesting against us claiming that we were using defaulters,” Mokalakane said.
