The BPP faction, aligned to BPP chairperson Richard Gudu, is also demanding that the election campaigns should start in earnest and no additional constituencies should be demanded.

In the letter, the group demanded that “the party president and chairperson and two other NEC [National Executive Committee] members should as a matter of urgency join other Umbrella partners as UDC NEC members before September”. They also want a special retreat to be called as soon as possible to call to order members viewed to be putting the party name into disrepute, so they state why action cannot be taken against them. “This applies to party members who write negative articles and posts in newspapers and Facebook.”

The group also says the “the BPP leadership should quickly give a public assurance that they are members of UDC. This should be done through radio and print media”.

Molapise and his faction have lately been challenging the membership of another UDC member, Botswana Congress Party (BCP). Molapise also snubbed two recent meetings called by the UDC national executive committee to resolve among other things, the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) fracas. Molapise is an ally to the BMD faction aligned to Ndaba Gaolathe. His detractors say the aged BPP leader and UDC chairperson has been “captured” by the Gaolathe faction, something that seem to have influenced his public rants against the Umbrella and its president, Duma Boko.

When contacted for comment, Molapise was evasive, instead referring Mmegi to the party spokesperson Tshepo Makhani. However, efforts to talk to both Makhani and Gudu were unsuccessful as their mobile phones rang unanswered.
