Man Killed In Mob Justice Attack

It is alleged that residents of Sehunong, located 60km away from Serowe village, assaulted the man to death out of anger because he had killed a seven-year-old boy and nine-year-old girl.

Serowe Police Station commander, Superintendent Molefe Patrick Molefe confirmed that they are investigating the incident that occurred last Tuesday night.

He said that the victim’s identity is still withheld, as investigations on the matter are still ongoing. He said the deceased is suspected to have killed two kids before the mob took the law into their hands, killing him.

“Investigations are ongoing to establish what could have lead to the young man’s horrible acts. It is alleged the victim had stabbed to death a boy aged seven and a girl aged nine with a knife and the indignant residents attacked and assaulted him to death. He sustained injuries to the body and it appears like he was beaten with something blunt. We also suspect that he might have been stabbed with sharp objects like knives because he also sustained a bad cut to his throat,” Molefe said.

Asked about the relationship of the victim to the children, Molefe said they are related.

“I have learnt that the victim is related to the children’ parents, they are distant cousins. The children’s parents are shocked by his gruesome acts because they do not know what could have influenced them. This is a unique case, we have not recorded a case of this nature in which a mob justice took the law into their hands in this policing area,” Molefe said. Molefe said the incident took place in a yard located a few metres away from a certain shebeen and learning about the man’s horrible actions, the furious mob that was drinking alcohol at the sheeben took the law into their hands and killed him.

“We have not arrested anyone in relation to the victim’s death because he was attacked by a mob. The bodies are currently at Sekgoma Memorial Hospital mortuary awaiting to be sent to Gaborone for post mortem,” Molefe said.

The police boss also raised concern over alarming rape cases in his policing area involving women who are attacked and raped at night while walking from entertainment places.

He said most of reported cases are from neighbouring villages of Sehunong, Mmashoro and Moiyabana to mention but a few. He said that their investigations have revealed that most rape cases involve women walking alone at night with a few being attacked in their sleep.

Molefe said that in most cases, women are attacked whilst under the influence of alcohol something that result in  a majority of them failing to identify the perpetrators.
