The match is expected to take place during the upcoming World Baseball Softball Conference (WBSC) to be hosted in Gaborone.

Speaking during the handover ceremony of softball equipment yesterday, Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) representative, Steve Botlhasitse said he has been informed by Botswana Softball Association (BSA) president, Tirelo Mukokomani, that they are putting together a presentation that would be forwarded to JICA.

He said it would mean a lot if JICA came onboard and assist in bringing the Japanese team to Botswana. Botlhasitse said the match would showcase what the Botswana men’s national team has to offer. He said the match would also benefit those who did not watch the team when competing at the World Softball Championships that were held in Canada, where Botswana finished in eighth position.

“The BSA executive has worked hard to make sure that softball becomes a leading sporting code in the country. Come Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Botswana would be amongst the top four teams,” he said.

JICA resident representative, Yukio Ishida said the equipment, which include amongst others balls, bats, gloves, helmets, cost P130,000.

He said the equipment was bought by the people of Japan. He said some of the stakeholders who had an input in the purchasing of the equipment are Japan Softball Association. Ishida said they are hopeful that the equipment would add value to softball in the country.
