Thebe Suffers Injury As Relay Team Crashes Out

The injury is expected to keep him out of action for about six weeks. He will miss the IAAF Diamond League scheduled for later this month. The relay team, boasting of Thebe, Amos, Onkabetse Nkobolo, Karabo Sibanda and Isaac Makwala was one of the country’s hope for a medal at the World Championships.

However, Makwala was rested in the heats after running three races in a space of two days. He was forced to take part in both the heats and the semi finals on the same day on Thursday after being quarantined for 48 hours on suspicion that he was one of the athelets attacked by the Norovirus.

He missed out on the 400m final. With Makwala rested in the 4x400m relay heats, Nkobolo started the race, passed the baton to Sibanda before Amos took over. Their hope of catching up suffered a blow when they dropped the baton in the final changeover.

The women’s relay team comprising  Christene Botlogetswe, Lydia Jele, Galefele Moroko and Amantle Montsho managed to reach the finals after finishing third in the heats. They clocked a national record of 3:26.90 in the process.
