Mosinyi was speaking during the Selebi-Phikwe tribal administration culture day which was held on Thursday under the theme, ‘Tsosoloso ngwao le matlotlo a rona’. He said parents have the responsibility to impart knowledge to their children. He said they have to be encouraged to live by it daily so that they can know more about it.

He added that it is disheartening that children take pride and have adopted other cultures that come with foreigners. “Children no longer know their cousins, uncles and aunts because they are raised in isolation. We have taught them that the English language is better and more valuable than other languages. It has been evident in the past few years that our culture is valuable and that it can be used to earn a living. We have seen young people using Setswana songs and poems to generate income. It is interesting because this is the other way of promoting and marketing our culture”, he said.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Development who is also a Member of Parliament for Selebi-Phikwe East Nonofo Molefhi, whose message was read by District Commissioner Patson Dibotelo said the theme is befitting in view of the fact that for a long time residents have not been devoting some special days to celebrate the beautiful culture in the town.

“We have a culture as Batswana and as the respective tribes that make up Botswana. Whether we stay in a town or not we should never forget our culture as Batswana.

It is through culture that we can raise our children to mature into responsible and morally upright citizens. It is also through culture that we as adults can maintain acceptable behaviour and attitudes that can keep us united and respectable as people,” Molefhi said.

He added that the government of Botswana takes the issue of culture very seriously. He said it is for this reason that a ministry responsible for culture was created. He further said the aim is to encourage all those with intentions to conserve and pass the culture from one generation to the other to do so.

He said as government, they believe that culture should be used to build and keep our society intact as opposed to dividing it. Among those who were in attendance was the town Mayor Molosiwa Molosiwa, his deputy Dorcus Letlhogela, councillors and school heads. People were served with Tswana Cuisine such as bogobe jwa lerotse, letlhodi, lebelele, bogobe jwa legala, seswaa and traditional beers.
