The neighbouring country has moved ahead of rivals, France and Ireland, and is now favourite to be announced the next host of the World Cup.  The South African bid received favourable ratings ahead of France and Ireland but the decision would be ratified through the World Rugby Council ballot next Wednesday. South Africa last staged the global showpiece in 1995.

BRU secretary general, Ernest Mantsi said they are still brainstorming on how to benefit from the global sporting event, in case South Africa is given the nod.

He said it would mean a lot for the entire continent if the World Cup comes to South Africa. “We have our fingers crossed that the South Africa Rugby Union (SARU) wins the vote next week. We have a working relationship with SARU. The procedure is that as neighbouring countries, we are provided with opportunities to become volunteers that form part of the manpower that assists,” he said. Mantsi said since they have relations with SARU, the BRU stands a better chance of being part of the global competition. He said as one of the upcoming nations in rugby, the technical knowledge is expected to benefit local players and coaches. Mantsi said teams could also camp in Botswana, which means forging relations with international federations.

He said the Rugby World Cup spillage would not only benefit rugby, but the entire sport tourism in Botswana. He said sport is one of the fastest growing industries that can be used to market the country.

Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) chairperson, Solomon Reikeletseng said the last time South Africa hosted the Rugby World Cup, there were some spill-offs for Botswana. He said if South Africa is given the green light, there are benefits that Botswana can reap. “When such events happen in Africa, as neighbouring countries, we benefit. If things go well and SARU wins the vote next week, it would be a wonderful thing,” he said.
