Local police ranked Africas finest

The results are contained in the World Internal Security and Police Index (WISPI), a study conducted by the International Police Science Association (IPSA), a Florida, USA-based research institute. The study, known as the WISPI, analyses countries’ internal securities across indicators. These include the general public’s perception of the police and security as well as measurement of the level of safety provided and forces needed to provide that level of security. WISPI also looked at the countries’ capacities, processes, legitimacy and outcomes.

The study also involved assessing the ability of other security apparatuses within a country such as the armed forces, private security and prison capacity looking at the number of personnel per 100,000 people.

Botswana emerged first in Africa and 47th worldwide, followed on the continent by Rwanda, which was 50th worldwide. “Botswana, in particular, has low levels of reported bribe payments to police and high levels of confidence in police at the local level,” the IPSA researchers said.

Globally, Nigeria performed worst on the index, followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Uganda and Pakistan. South Africa, where social media is always on the case of police brutality and corruption, was also lowly ranked on the index.
