First assembly as president: Letshwiti

First assembly as president: Letshwiti

The latter took over from Tebogo Sebego last year in a highly-contested BFA election that also marked the end for other national executive committee members.

The presidential election were forced to go for a re-run after Letshwiti took the lead, but failed to garner enough numbers to be declared the winner. Letshwiti eventually clinched the seat. He vowed to clean the association during his term as the president.

His election came after a Premier League season that was characterised by ugly scenes that followed the registration of Zebras midfielder, Ofentse Nato. A lot has already happened under his leadership with the Botswana Premier League (BPL) and the mother body now under new heads of secretariats. At the time of his arrival, he found that the BPL board had launched a financial audit after the league found itself in the red. Letshwiti endorsed the decision.

During the investigations, the then BPL chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi was suspended. The suspension led to endless court cases. Mamelodi was eventually relieved of his duties after the completion of the audit. He was not the only one who faced suspension, the financial officer at the BPL, Bosenogile Mpiwa was also slapped with suspension.

At the mother body, Kitso Kemoeng was also shown the door and replaced by Ookeditse Malesu. Letshwiti said he found that the association’s coffers are dry. The association is reportedly P10 million in the red.

Recently, the association was forced to withdraw the national Under-20 women’s team from the World Cup qualifiers because of the financial situation at the office. The president is expected to address the assembly tomorrow on the progress made since he took over.

He is expected to touch on the issues relating to the expulsion of Mamelodi and Kemoeng as well as the current financial situation.

On other issues, he is also expected to touch on the issue of club licensing which is currently giving Premier League sides sleepless nights.

He recently gave Premier League sides a tongue lashing on the issue, accusing them of moving at a snail’s pace in addressing the matter.   During his campaign, Letshwiti emphasised the need to start grassroots development. He has already hit the ground running on the matter with the launch of the youth leagues around the country.
