Maun taximan allegedly rapes passenger

The sexual attack allegedly happened after the girl, who had booked the driver, had to be dropped off at her place following a night out. Assistant superintendent of Maun police , Samuel Kgomo told Mmegi that they are investigating the case in which a 22-year-old man allegedly raped a teenaged girl.

He alleged that the girl had asked to be dropped off at her place, but instead the taxi driver, who was in the company of a male friend, drove to his family home in Thito ward. He said upon arriving, the man allegedly forced the woman into the house and then sexually attacked her against her will.

Kgomo said that after he had finished, the suspect then called his friend to the house, who had remained in the car, to have sex with the girl as well. He explained that the police who were patrolling the streets,  heard the girl’s scream and rushed to the yard where the duo was arrested.

Kgomo explained that the first accused will be charged with rape while the second accused in the matter will face attempted rape. They are both in custody awaiting finalisation of the investigations. Kgomo complained about incidents of taxi drivers committing rape saying the crime is horrible, as public transport operators are supposed to be trustworthy.

He said: “Public transport service is a very important sector in the society and our economy. We cannot have criminals masquerading as taxi operators”. Kgomo explained that they usually liaise with taxi associations to encourage their members not to be involved in crime. Meanwhile, Kgomo said that four men were arrested at Ngami Abattoir after they were caught trying to sell eight illegal cattle.

He explained that investigations into the case are ongoing and the men are likely to be charged with stock theft. In another case, Kgomo disclosed that a body of a man  man aged 33 was retrieved from Boro River on Sunday in a suspected case of drowning.

He explained that the deceased, who is from Shashe ward was discovered by a Mokoro (canoe) poler.  He was taken to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital where he was certified dead on arrival.
