Gaothobogwe Retains BISA Presidency

He has been leading the association for more than a decade now.
Delivering his acceptance speech during the BISA elective annual general meeting (AGM) held at the Majestic Five Hotel over the weekend, Gaothobogwe acknowledged the inclusion of five women in the executive committee compared to the previous committee, which had one. He warned the new committee to be aware that they are expected to deliver and bring something different to BISA.
He urged all the delegates to avail themselves whenever the need arises despite some having lost during elections. He thanked all the sports heads for having availed themselves at the meeting despite their financial difficulties.
Gaothobogwe will for the coming four years be assisted by the former South Central Zone organiser, Joy Kenosi who won the vice president (technical) position with 100 votes.
He stood against Thuso Mudongo, Kakanyo Emang and Basiami Molathiwa. He replaces Radihephi who this time around contested for the highest position in the association. Harold Mosomane scooped the position of secretary general. She contested against Alfred Rantheng, Gomolemo Rankosha, Lesego Muzila, Boniface Lekaba and Christopher Chikwakwa.
The position of vice secretary was won by Oreeditse Moruakgomo who stood against Boago Obonetse and Maxwell Muzila. Tapiwa Kengaletswe emerged victorious in the position of treasurer for which she was contesting against Daniel Tshume. Letsweletse Jonas on the other hand retained his post as publicity secretary after beating Mmoloki Gaobonwe and Neo Diboko.
As for the administration body, Keabetswe Friday, Thusego Segaisi and Milicent Mokubung retained their positions as the national organisers in athletics, rugby and tennis respectively as they all stood unopposed.
In other posts, Olebile Kepaletswe won the national organiser post for basketball while Edward Lesole retained his position in badminton. Karate national organiser position was scooped by Ezekiel Seru while table tennis position was won by Ntaolang Motingwa who retained her position.
Gaseitsewe Ponatshego won the boxing national organiser post whereas Kenneth Keakile won the volleball national organiser post. Masego Moiya got the softball national organiser post while Alvina Molwantwa got the netball position. Football national organiser position was won by Thabiso Ramosweu.
Earlier on during the AGM, Gaothobogwe gave a report on the strategic plan review looking at high level targets as aligned to the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC).
He outlined marketing and communication, stakeholders engagements, corporate governance, resource mobilisation, monitoring and evaluation as well as sports development as very vital targets.
He said the BNSC ought to improve athletes’ performance to increase high profile event hosting and also to increase participation in sports.
For his part, BNOC chief executive officer Tuelo Serufho, who was the keynote speaker, emphasised the importance of teachers’ role saying it is through them that BISA can realise and unearth athletes’ talent. He highlighted that without teachers volunteering directly in ball sports, BISA will not be in existence.
Serufho also advised that in the future, BISA should think along the lines of involving out of school athletes into mainstream teams and sports activities at schools just to accord them an opportunity and ability to strengthen and grow younger players.
He also urged coaches not to force children to specialise in one sport at an early age saying they must be exposed to many sports as possible and specialise at ages of around 15.
On elections, Serufho advised BISA delegates to be wise in voting incoming leaders. He shunned delegates who vote along vindictive based gestures where they would caucus to oust possibly qualified or able-bodied candidates.
