Delivering a keynote speech at the college graduation ceremony over the weekend, Jefferis said: “Let me caution you to resist job-hopping too frequently.

I have been involved in recruitment over many years and one thing that doesn’t look good to me is when people have worked in many jobs for very short periods.

Some young people have had more jobs in a few years than I have had in 30 years”.

The Econsult managing director said having several jobs in a working lifetime does not mean that it is fine to frequently move from one job to another for an extra P500 a month, or because one had an argument with their boss.

“An important part of your learning comes from on the job experience, and that only comes if you stick with a job or an employer, for at least a few years.

And employers value loyalty.

If an employer expects you to quit the job after a few months, he or she is much unlikely to invest in building your capacity,” he said. Jefferis urged the graduates to use their connections to get jobs.  He said he received many CVs via email and those hand dropped but cannot really pay much attention to them unless the person seeking employment is introduced by someone he knows.

He said though it seemed unfair to those without connections, it is a reality.

The college’s executive director Daisy Molefhi encouraged the students to use the entrepreneurial skills they learnt from the college to create employment.

“Unemployment is a reality, but need not be a permanent reality.

You can choose to think like any graduate and be one of the statistics of unemployment or you can choose to think differently that you will not queue for a job. It’s all about mind-set.

Use your qualification as a spring board to a brighter future, explore your environments,” she said. Molefhi said embracing entrepreneurship development has resulted in a number of undertakings, including offering Entrepreneurship Development learning programmes at various levels embedding entrepreneurship and leadership.

With the institution establishing the Entrepreneurship Development Centre, which was launched in February 2017. This facility, among others provides opportunities for business incubation.

We also established the ABM Entrepreneurship Club, through which students are expected to exchange ideas on entrepreneurship.

Our aim is thus to contribute to the creation of an enterprising graduate,” she said.

BSc (Hons) accounting and finance graduate Ditebogo Setumo scooped best overall student in the degree level while Lebopo Thindimba was best overall diploma student for her Advanced Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management.
