Lucas’ remarks come in the wake of emerging reports of unrest within the UDC. Lately there have been insinuations that certain cadres within the BCP do not want to be part of the troubled UDC.

The speculation is attributed to swelling reports that the BCP does not enjoy a strong relationship with some of their UDC partners.

Lucas stated that choosing to go solo at the next general elections will not be a viable option for the BCP.

Lucas was speaking at a BCP rally held over the weekend, where he also welcomed new members from the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

He averred that the reason why they lost dismally at the 2014 general elections was because they were not part of the UDC.

He said the UDC is the only arrangement that can usher in a new government that can ultimately liberate Batswana from ‘abuse’ of power by the current government.

“Dumelang Saleshando was one of the outstanding Members of Parliament (MP), admired by many but he lost during the 2014 general elections only because we went against what the nation wanted, that is the UDC.

Thopho ga o kake wa bo wa e bona fa o se mo thulaganyong. Re ne ra nna diingaudi mme ra sha; re ka se she gabedi (We were punished because we were not part of the UDC),” said Lucas.

The former BCP spokesperson also urged UDC members not to lose faith in the coalition project as a result of the current infighting within the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD).

He added: “What the BMD is going through right now shall pass. It is just a phase that most political parties come across during the early years of their formation”.
