LSB hosts the 18th SADC conference, AGM

The Theme of the event is, ‘A skilled and competent legal profession: A catalyst for a prosperous SADC’. There will be a series of panel discussions during the two-day event, which is set to attract eminent persons, legal practitioners and other stakeholders from Botswana, the SADC region and internationally. Day one of the event will focus on thought provoking and relevant issues not only to the SADC region but globally.

The day will start with a panel discussion on, The Legal Profession- A leading voice in the defence of the rule of law: A look at recent regional challenges and opportunities. The topic will set the tone for the day and the conference as the Rule of Law underpins every aspect of good governance and development. The role of lawyers in fighting corruption and illicit financial flows (IFF) will also be explored.

The effect of corruption and IFF on development is very topical. Because of their role in transactions, some of which eventually facilitate such corruption and IFF it is critical that lawyers take a prominent position curbing and fighting against corruption and IFF. International arbitration and mediation: An African Renaissance will be the third topic of the day. The topic will explore the extent to which arbitration and mediation is being employed as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism in the SADC region.

The Women Lawyers Forum will explore the challenges that professional women and businesswomen face in the region and how those historical and present issues can be tackled. The session will provide live perspectives of the challenges and successes.
