The Jwaneng Customary Court was full to capacity as the public came to have sight of the boys who allegedly stabbed a 32-year-old man who is currently battling for his life at the Jwaneng Mine hospital.

Superintendent Thuso Basuti revealed that they received an alarming number of criminal incidents during the weekend and they managed to arrest 35 suspects. One motorist had his tyre punctured before was attacked by the group who stabbed him with a sharp object whilst his passengers sustained injuries from stabbing. Their belongings were stolen in the process.

Furthermore, another attack was of a group of 15 boys on a 38-year-old man whose car was smashed with bottles at the Debswana Club the same night.

“We also arrested 14 boys on the streets of Jwaneng that night and charged them for unlawful idling because they could not account as to why they were in those places. Some have already appeared before the Customary Court and majority of them are former Moshupa Senior Secondary School students who just completed their examinations last week. They alleged that they came for Pens Down Party in Jwaneng and we are thankful to the public for assisting us to arrest the terrorists,” said Basuti.

One group appeared before the Jwaneng Customary Court while the other group was araigned before Raphalane Customary Court still in Jwaneng.  The first batch of accused persons included Brian Tlhabane (19) and Aaron Othusitse (18) both from Moshupa. The duo were arrested at softball pitches in Unit 3 and charged for idling at around three o’clock in the morning. Though they pleaded guilty to the charge, they refuted allegations that they were on a mission to rob people. They said they were equally assaulted by an unknown group of people before they were arrested, adding that upon arriving in Jwaneng, they heard that the party they were attending had been cancelled and they had no place to sleep.

The court sentenced each one of them to six strokes on bare buttocks, to the pleasure of the audience who responded with a round of applause. They were however advised to appeal the sentence at the Customary Court of Appeal if they were not satisfied with the sentence.
