Two-year-old dies after eating poison

Assistant superintendent (ASP) Borefeletse Phaphane explained that the deceased and other two girls apparently ate a poisonous stuff at Maruleng cattle post near Xharaga village.

He explained that the mother to one of the affected girls noticed a strange white mucus coming from the three children’s mouths and immediately phoned the grandfather who had shortly left home.

ASP Phaphane said on arrival the elderly man realised that the situation was serious and transported two of the affected children on horse back to a nearby health facility in Xharaga.

The other remaining child was later taken to the hospital by police who were accompanied by members’ emergency services.  ASP Phaphane said: “The cattle post is on the other side of the river and to get to the clinic they have to cross the river first however he managed to reach the clinic.”

Phaphane explained that the three children were transported to Letsholathebe Memorial hospital where the other was confirmed dead.

He said the two surviving girls are still admitted at Letsholathebe II memorial Hospital. The girls are related.
