Three die in minibus accident

 Others were seriously injured.

The incident comes less than a week after another road accident involving a bus and a Nissan March sedan claimed lives of four people. The two accidents happened almost on the same spot at Tewane near Mahalapye. The victims were reportedly travelling from a wedding ceremony in Dibete to their home village, Bobonong. The police have confirmed that the deceased were relatives.

According to Mahalapye police station commander, Superintendent Isaac Mamadi, there were 16 people on board the combi.  He said preliminary investigations show that the driver of the combi might have lost control of the car before it overturned. He said they suspect that the combi driver might have been driving at a high speed.

“All the people who lost their lives were female passengers. The oldest was 59 years while the youngest was 38. They all died on the spot.” Mamadi added that six passengers were critically injured, with two referred to Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital (NRH), while four were still recuperating at Mahalapye Hospital. The driver of the combi and six other passengers were treated at Mahalapye Hospital for minor injuries and later discharged.

The police boss expressed worry at the swelling rate of road mishaps within the jurisdiction of Mahalapye police. He noted that it is very rare for road accidents that happen in his policing area to kill one person.

“We urge drivers to exercise caution on the A1 road. The regular occurrence of road accidents clearly shows that drivers are not driving with caution,” said the station commander.
