Deferred: Diphalane will not open in time for festive shoppers

The multimillion pula mall was expected to house shops such as Shoprite, Mr Price and many others currently not available in the village.

Diphalane project manager, Kesiilwe Taodi said they now hope the mall will be operational next month with the majority of shops opening.

He said almost everything is in place but they are just left with small finishing touches, which they hope would be done by next month.

“Some of the delays were actually caused by the tenants themselves.

“Next week we will be having the stakeholders’ consultative meeting to discuss the final touches,” Taodi said.

During an interview with some of the residents, they expressed disappointments at the delay in the opening of the mall.

“I was looking forward to Shoprite among all those shops more especially this festive simply because here we have only Choppies, Spar and Shoppers which in my observation offers limited products as compared to Shoprite,” Masa Raserowe said.

She further said that they were looking forward to special prices, both from clothing and food stores, since it is a norm that when a new shop opens it offers special prices.

Modiri Sehuleng said it is a norm in Botswana that time is never respected, which he says is the reason why the country does not fit international standards.
