The event, organised by the Charity Association of Chinese in Botswana (CACB), the Botswana Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and BOHGA attracted about 45 sponsors and this year’s beneficiary was Cristal Victory Home, a non-governmental organisation that sponsors orphans for tertiary education as well as caring for the needy.

The organisation received a cheque of P10,000 during a prize giving ceremony held at the Gaborone Golf Club. Speaking at the occasion, the Chinese ambassador to Botswana Zhao Yanbo applauded the Chinese community in Botswana for upholding one of the greatest values of the Asian country; giving. “Charity, or extending a helping hand is a very important cultural virtue and value for the Chinese people,” he said.

Zhao said it is a good gesture in the sense that friendship is maintained through the corporate social responsibility.  He added that a friend in need is a friend indeed.

Ambassador Zhao also said it is platforms such as these ones that strengthen collaboration, further saying it offers an opportune time for the Chinese in Botswana to help locals understand the Chinese culture and values.

The event is on its ninth year. According to organisers, it is aimed at creating a relationship between Batswana and the Chinese. Moreover, the Chinese community here uses it as an expression of being part of the community through raising funds that are given to selected organisations in need yearly.
