Police arrest woman for dumped foetus

The six-months-old male foetus was later certified dead at Athlone Hospital where its corpse remains in the hospital mortuary after a post-mortem was done on Monday morning. Woodhall police station’s detective assistant Superintendent, Barulaganyi Matshaba said the woman was arrested last week and forensic evidence is yet to be received by police.

“We have arrested a 25-year-old woman in connection with a case in which a lifeless foetus was found in a pit latrine in Woodhall ward last week. The woman was questioned and released and she will be definitely charged according to the law and tried before court.

“The foetus is still at the hospital mortuary. Upon questioning the suspect, she told us that the foetus dropped into the pit latrine by mistake,” Matshaba said.

Meanwhile, Woodhall police station commander, Superintendent Tebogo Madisa said they have not arrested anyone in connection with other foetus dumping incidents, which happened this year in his area.

Since January 2017, at least three foetuses were found dumped. Two happened in Woodhall and one in Pitikwe where another six-months-old foetus was found dumped in a sewage pond.

No suspects were arrested in connection with the incidents. The office of the District Commissioner later facilitated the burial of foetuses.
