Victorious: Botho ran away with inaugural BOTESSA title

Botho scored their first try after a UB mistake in the middle. Botho took full advantage as UB committed errors, which saw the leaders score three tries towards the end of the first half. Teams came in the last round of the match playing good, with UB mistimed tackles and lost scramble balls. Botho had the upper hand while UB continued to press the self destruct button in a game played over 20minutes.

Both teams fielded experienced players, some of whom play in the national rugby league.

UB coach, Osi Kopano told Monitor Sport that the game started well however they lost the match due to frequent mistakes. He said maybe this was down to trying too much to match Botho.

“We created simple mistakes that killed us. However, my team played well from the beginning of the tournament. It is just that we failed to win our last game. I am proud of both teams for displaying a highly competitive game and quality play in the first BOTESSA rugby tournament,” Kopano said.

Botho coach, Zibo Molefe said the game was competitive and exciting. He said the game went according to plan, which was to make most of their moves productive.

“I am happy that we faced the most difficult opponent and at the end we were the best team and won the first ever championships. Coming to these games, we did not train that much but we managed to emerge as gold medallists,” Molefe said.

Botho went home with a trophy and gold medals, with UB settling for silver. Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) finished third. Other participating institutions were Maun Technical College (MTC), Botswana Accountancy College South (BAC S) and Botswana Accountancy College North (BAC N).
