Gaelebale qualified for the Top 40 after competing against 118 contestants from all over the world for a place in Saturday’s finale. Although she did Botswana proud by making it to the finale, Gaelebale was not fortunate enough to make it to the Top 15, Top 10 and final Top Five. Gaelebale was amongst the only five African countries that made it to the Top 40. Nigeria made it as far as the Top 15, while South Africa made it into the Top 10 and Kenya into the final Top 5.

The last Miss Botswana to come close to the title was the 2010 first runner up, Emma Wareus.  After the crowning, Gaelebale was quick to congratulate Chhillar on her Facebook page and thanked Batswana for the support.

“It was an amazing and memorable journey.  Am so thankful to have made it into Top 40,” she posted on her Facebook page.

Earlier on the night, she thanked the Miss Botswana 2017 Top 12 girls for the good luck message they sent her.

As for the Miss World 2017 queen, Chhillar, she ended the 16 years of drought for India at the international pageant. She is the sixth Indian to win the title and the first since Priyanka Chopra when she won the crown in 2000.

The first Miss World crown was won for India by Reita Faria in 1943 followed which Aishwarya Rai (1994), Diana Hayden (1997), Yukta Mookhey (1999) and Priyanka Chopra (2000).

Miss World 2016 winner, Puerto Rico’s Stephanie Del Valle, crowned Chhillar. Miss Mexico Andrea Meza was announced the first runner up, while Miss England Stephanie Hill was declared the second runner up at the finale.
