Keetshabe is the new AG

The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) principal public relations officer, Karabo Marumo issued a press released on Tuesday announcing the appointment of the new AG and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). The press release reads, “On the 25th July 2017, the Permanent Secretary to the President and Secretary to cabinet, Carter Morupisi announced the appointment of Advocate Abraham M. Keetshabe and Stephen B. Tiroyakgosi to the positions of AG and DPP respectively in the AGC with effect from 1st August 2017.

“Prior to the said appointment, advocate Keetshabe served as the Director of Public Prosecutions since March 2016 with a career spanning over three decades in the legal fraternity.  He was first appointed to the magistracy in 1986 as a junior magistrate and rose through the ranks to become the first Motswana to be appointed a Chief Magistrate. 

In 1996, he left the magistracy on promotion to the position of Deputy Registrar and Master of the High Court, first in Francistown and later at the Lobatse High Court,” reads the press release. It states: “Furthermore, in 2004 Advocate Keetshabe joined AGC as the deputy AG and head of the civil litigation division, and later the Office of the President in 2011 as general counsel responsible for providing legal services to the Presidency, a position he held until he was appointed the DPP in March 2016. 

Advocate Keetshabe graduated with an LLB degree from the University of Botswana (UB) in conjunction with the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 1986”. It stated that with regard to (Stephen) Tiroyakgosi’s appointment as the new DPP, he previously served as the Secretary for International and Commercial Services at Deputy Attorney General Level and head of the International and Commercial Division in AGC. 

Tiroyakgosi’s career spans over a period of 26 years as a lawyer having been admitted to practice way back in 1991.   He first worked as a prosecutor between 1991 and 2001 and then joined the general division of the AGC. It further reads: “In addition, between May 2009 and June 2011, Tiroyakgosi worked at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BUIST) as director of Legal Services and Secretary to council.

He has also taught courses in Business law and taxation, administrative law and constitutional law at UB’s centre for continuing education and law department respectively. “He holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree from UB and a Master of Law (LLM) in International Law from the Australian National University. 

  Otherwise, he has been a member of various Boards such as the Casino Control Board ,now Gambling Authority, the Mental Health Board, the Minerals Development Company Botswana Limited Board, as well as the chairperson of Stepping Stones International Botswana, a non-governmental organisation dealing with orphans and vulnerable children. He takes over the position of DPP from advocate Keetshabe,” reads the media release.
