Mugabe faces possible impeachment

Mugabe was yesterday sacked by his party, Zanu PF, as the party leader, while his wife Grace Mugabe was expelled from the governing political group.
Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu PF yesterday convened a special central committee meeting in which they decided Mugabe’s fate in Harare, Zimbabwe. Mugabe’s former Vice President (VP), Emmerson Mnangagwa will replace Mugabe as Zanu PF’s leader of 37 years.
“His party has followed the necessary steps, but Mugabe remains President of the Republic until Parliament removes him constitutionally on Tuesday, we understand. The painful thing is that Mugabe will now be stripped of his Presidential benefits.
He will remain as an ordinary citizen, something that would be painful for someone who has fought for (the liberation of) his country. He should just swallow his pride and resign before Parliament takes that step,” Morima says.
He says if Parliament impeaches Mugabe, then he will not be given security or retired presidential housing.
He adds: “The government could prosecute him, something that even the army boss does not want happening to Mugabe. You could easily see that Zanu PF is dancing to the army’s tune because the special central committee meeting was organised within a blink of an eye. Again, Southern African Development Community (SADC), African Union (AU) and European countries cannot challenge the decision of Parliament”. Some of the resolutions that Zanu PF have taken are that Mugabe’s wife is to be prosecuted because she influenced Mugabe to loot the country. Some members of Zanu PF accused of trying to topple Mugabe after the 2014 general elections willl be reinstated while those close to Mugabe and his wife are expelled.
Mugabe and his VP had a falling out, which forced him to flee to South Africa. Mnangagwa was recently sacked by Mugabe, accusing him of being disloyal.
In a recent statement, Mnangagwa vowed to return to Zimbabwe to oust President Mugabe, saying the ruling party has been captured by the Mugabe family and members of the so-called Generation 40 allegedly led by First Lady, Grace Mugabe. Chris Mutsvangwa, the chairperson of the Zimbabwe War Veterans Association said the party is beginning the process to remove Mugabe as President of Zimbabwe.
