There has been an outcry in the past that despite excelling, some codes still struggle to receive improved funding, while all the money goes to football, but with little returns.

Reikeletseng told a press conference in Gaborone on Monday that the BNSC is considering allocating resources based on performance. Meanwhile, Reikeletseng said the BNSC had achieved its four targets in their first four-year strategy towards meeting the Vision 2028 long-term targets.

Reikeletseng said in the first four years of their strategic plan, they have achieved well on contribution of sport to society, increase in athlete performance, increase in sport participation and increase in hosting high profile sport events.

He said the 16-year plan started back in 2013 and they have divided it into four-year strategies to ensure they remain on course.

“The first four years of the strategy ended in 2016 and we are proud to announce that we have achieved our first four targets. This was achieved through the tireless effort of the BNSC secretariat in implementing the plans for the commission and the government,” Reikeletseng said.

He said local athletes continue to represent the country well in international assignments in different sporting codes like athletics, netball, swimming and softball. He said they have recorded improvemnt from the previous performances like in attaining position two at the AUSC Region V Games last year improving from position three attained in 2012.

“The level of sports participation has increased in our country, which includes at primary and secondary schools, and the constituency sports tournaments, which include football, netball, volleyball and athletics,” he said.

He said sports now contribute to the society which was one of their targets to see sport playing a role in the economy of Botswana.

“We are now happy to report that sport contributes 0.44% to the gross domestic product. This has been calculated by extrapolating income that is used in various sporting activities in a year,” Reikeletseng added.
