Two die in motorcycle crash

One of the deceased, Phenyo ‘Kiko’ Venson, is the nephew of the Minister of International Affairs and Cooperation, Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi.  Venson was working as an events coordinator at Hotwire Public Relations Agency.  His companion was Shalom ‘Shaznana’ Moeti.

The Rising Phoenix MCC Botswana Cycling Club issued a statement announcing the duo’s death on Monday.

The statement reads: “It is with our deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved club members, Phenyo ‘Kiko’ Venson and Shalom ‘Shaznana’ Moeti on 30 July 2017. The two were killed in a terrible accident that has left the biking community, particularly our club in shock and devastation. We count on your prayers to the family and friends of these two bikers.”

Ramotswa police station commander, superintendent Keoagile Tau told Mmegi they are yet to establish the cause of the accident. He said that it appears the deceased were heading towards Gaborone while the car was heading southwards.

“The accident occurred by the curve near the landfill towards Otse village around 10pm. We do not know what exactly happened, but investigation to establish the cause of the accident is ongoing,” Tau said.

“Investigations are ongoing to locate anyone who might have witnessed the accident to tell us what really transpired that night. The driver of the Honda Fit is seriously injured and hospitalised at Bamalete Lutheran Hospital,” Tau said

Meanwhile, Tau said they are investigating yet another road accident that occurred on Sunday evening in which a Madza 3 car overturned opposite Lion Park.

“The car was heading towards Gaborone when the accident occurred. We do not know what really happened because it looks like the car overturned on its own. We are yet to establish if the accident was caused by a mechanical fault or anything else,” Tau said.

Tau said the car had only the driver, who sustained minor injuries and is currently recuperating at Bokamoso Private Hospital.

Tau revealed that they have observed excessive speeding on the road and pleaded with drivers to obey the road sings and to drive within the speed limit.

He also cautioned drivers to be alert along A1 road, especially towards Boatle because the road is currently under construction.

“Drivers should take precaution as the road is under construction. They should drive within reasonable speed so that if anything happens they can be able to control their cars,” Tau said.

He pleaded with drivers to make sure that their vehicles are road worthy before taking on a journey and rest because fatigue has in the past contributed a lot to most of the fatal accidents.
