BR train kills two women at Bots, SA border

This was confirmed by the district traffic officer at Lobatse police station, Superintendent Member Machola in an interview with Mmegi.

Machola said the deceased were in company of another Motswana woman who sustained serious injuries and is currently admitted in ICU at Bophelong government hospital in Mafikeng, South Africa.

He said that they do not know what could have caused the accident and do not have much details on the case as it is being investigated by South African police.

“South African police are conducting the investigations into the matter. The duo (the driver and passenger) lost their lives on the spot whilst the other passenger sustained serious injuries and currently hospitalised. They were driving a BMW car traveling from Mafikeng, South Africa towards Botswana when the accident occurred,” Machola said.

“What I can confirm is that the incident indeed occurred and their car was knocked off by a Botswana train that was carrying goods from Mafikeng, South Africa traveling towards Botswana,” Machola said.

He said that the names of the deceased are still withheld until they notify their family members.

“The women are aged between 32 and 54 years. It appears that they had visited South Africa and were returning home when the accident occurred. The crash happened around 15:45 towards the border,” Machola said.
