Masitara, Sukunyetsa too old for TAFIC

The experienced players alongside former Orapa United’s Lovemore Murirwa underwent trials at TAFIC, but flunked the test.

Masitara has been a menace for over a decade and once finished as top goal scorer, while Sukunyetsa took the local scene by storm as he supplied passes from the midfield with sheer precision.

Masitara’s tryout was shortlived as he was not part of the team that played the Mayor’s Cup in Gaborone.

Sukunyetsa and Murirwa had an opportunity to prove their mettle at the cup, but failed to win the technical team’s favour. Murirwa is said to be training with Sua Flamingoes.

“Our technical team has looked at them (Masitara and Sukunyetsa), but they have felt age has taken a toll and decided against signing them,” club spokesperson, Warrant Kolola said.

“The other problem was that the two are foreigners and we want foreigners who would perform above the locals. In the two spots left for foreigners, we are looking at an energetic midfielder and striker who would fit our quick style of play.”

Meanwhile, Matjimenyenga have signed Goabaone ‘Shoes’ Selefa.  The club has also signed Ocean Mpofu and Lesego Bosekeng all from Gilport Lions.

Kolola said over and above the new signings the team had managed to retain the core of the squad.  The only player who has left is Mothusi Johnson who has joined Gaborone United.

He said their main worry is lack of sponsorship. He said the club still survives through handouts from the community while they continue to struggle in their attempts to get a main sponsor.

“It’s hard to recruit players when you are not certain of their maintenance. We had expected that by now we would have signed a sponsorship deal with one or two companies, but the business community is not forthcoming.”

“We are working around the clock with the city leadership who are assisting us in trying to bring the business community on board.  Premiership is an expensive exercise and it would be unfortunate after we fought so hard for a return only to relegate a season later.”
