Each continent will be represented at the showpiece, which will attract powerhouses, New Zealand, Japan, Argentina, Canada, and the hosts.

Botswana’s invitation came after a brilliant display during the World Championships in Canada in July. Botswana made history by advancing to the playoffs of the championships and in the process downing some European giants. The ultimate winners and current world number one, New Zealand knocked the locals out of the playoffs.

Botswana Softball Association president, Tirelo Mukokomani said they have received support from the hosts and they have put processes in place to ensure the team participates at the tournament.

“This means to us that we are on the right track. We are doing something that is recognisable in the world,” he said.

“We have made an undertaking that we will take part in the intercontinental cup in the Czech Republic. “This is the growth we have always wished for and we cannot disappoint. We are doing everything we can to reach Czech Republic next year.”

Meanwhile, softball clubs, both in the north and south zones took to the mound to kick-start Botswana Fibre Network (BoFiNet) League new season over the weekend.

The league was launched at the National Diamond where the southerners Panthers, Police IX, BMC, UB Giants, Titans, Stingers, BDF IX and Eagles competed.

In the north, the teams met in Serowe, with the usual suspects, men’s Rail Giants going top after winning all their games. Their ever-dominant women’s team, however, met a new challenger. Scramblers, which fell apart after Botswana Defence Force stopped assistance, turned the screws in a bid to reclaim their former status as the north’s best. Scramblers took the lead of the women’s log. This weekend the north sides travel to Orapa where Orapa Carats, Rebels, Comets and Ghetto Yankees will battle out.
